Three arrested for
rhino poaching
Modimolle – Three alleged rhino poachers, aged 31 to 37, were arrested on Wednesday 4 September after they were linked to a rhino poaching incident in Modimolle.
The three, who are accused of killing a rhinoceros before removing its horns, were nabbed at various locations during joint operations by the police, security companies and farmers around the Rankin’s Pass and Vaalwater areas.
“Tracks of the poachers were followed with the farmer’s air support. Two other suspects are still on the run. However, they have been identified and the manhunt is underway,” police spokesperson colonel Moatshe Ngoepe said.
During the arrest, a motor vehicle, two rhino horns, a hunting rifle with a silencer, eight rounds of ammunition and an axe were recovered by the police.
If you have any information that can lead to the apprehension of the remaining two suspects, you are requested to contact colonel Alpheus Mokale at 082 565 6524. You can also contact the crime stop number 08600 10111 or your nearest police station.
