Limpopo – The Limpopo province has recorded the largest decrease in road fatalities during the 2019 Easter period, when compared to the figures of other provinces.

In his preliminary report on road fatalities that occurred on South Africa’s roads between Thursday 18 April and Monday 22 April, transport minister doctor Blade Nzimande revealed that there was a 48% decrease for 2019 when compared to figures recorded during the same period in 2018.

“The number of fatalities on SA roads decreased from 309 in 2018, to 162 in 2019. This marks a decrease of 147 fatalities,” he said.

“The highest decrease in absolute figures was recorded by Limpopo with 41 fatalities, followed by KwaZulu-Natal with 33 fatalities,” he added.

He attributed the decreases to the operations conducted by law enforcement agencies and their increased visibility on the roads during the holiday period.

However, the minister pointed out that despite the reduction in fatalities, the government was still concerned with the loss of life on the country’s roads, which usually peaks during holidays such as Easter.
