SBPM BOASTS 20 COMRADES MARATHON RUNNERS

Northam – Siyanda Bakgatla Platinum Mine (SBPM) Marathon Club had 20 athletes competing in the 94th South-Africa’s Premier Ultra Comrades Marathon race on Saturday 9 June.

To show their support, Union Mine Management, Benjamin Mokoka, Sipho Dondolo and Gontse Sekudu attended the event to cheer the SBPM runners on. The Comrades Marathon is not about winning, it is about reaching the finish line before the 12-hour cut off time.

A marathon is about rapid gains, it is about the ability to endure pain. It is not about the thrill; it is about stamina and skill. The last 30km of the Comrades Marathon is a fight of endurance between body and mind.

The mind tells your body to run, while the body becomes exhausted and desperately wants to give in. The unwavering support and cheering from Refilwe Lelaka, Connie Monosi, Michelle le Roux, George Mphatoe, Charles Ntsabele, Kay Tshabadira and Phuti Ngoepe at the 45km and 55km water points just outside Durban kept the athletes motivated and pushing hard until the finish line.

General Manager of SBPM Hobson Jantjies conveyed a message of support and encouragement whilst they were busy with the race. He congratulated the team for their endurance and tenacity.

Kay Mdalana, one of SBPM’s top runners achieved his personal best this year with a time of 7:25:02. Previous years Kay obtain four silver, eight Bill Rowan medals and one bronze medal in the Comrades Marathon.
