Capture and removal of excess game  on Leeupoort Nature Reserve

Leeupoort – It is with great relief that Thabazimbi Local Municipality (TLM) can report that the excess game on Leeupoort Nature Reserve was captured and removed during the third week of August 2019.

The reserve has been overstocked for a long time – to the detriment of the vegetation as well as the animals. A TLM council resolution was taken at the end of February 2018 to identify the excess animals and have them captured and sold. It has taken more than a year to orchestrate this decision.

Residents of Leeupoort have – over the past few years – contributed from their own resources to feed animals during the winter months, a gesture which is highly appreciated.

This nature reserve and its animals belong to the TLM. The capture and removal of 181 animals were conducted without any injury or death of an animal. Within the next week or two, an additional 28 animals will be captured and removed.
