Fighting a jumping fire!

Thabazimbi/ Koedoeskop/ Kwaggasvlakte – The dry conditions after winter has left the bushveld vulnerable to veld fires. 

On Monday 9 September, residents of Kwaggasvlakte outside Thabazimbi summoned the community to help extinguish a runaway fire. 

Since the fire ban on 1 August, Thabazimbi Fire Protection Association (TFPA) dealt with the following cases:

• Sentrum – 3ha was lost due to a spark from a welder.
• Kromdraai – 50ha lost due to someone burning waste and 60ha lost due to a fire jumping from the North West border.
• Koedoeskop – 5,300ha lost due to a fire being started on government ground.
• Kwaggasvlakte – 400ha lost due to someone burning waste.
• Spitskop – 3ha lost, reasons unknown.
• Leadwood – 30ha lost, reasons unknown.
• Rooiberg – 4,500ha lost due to a burning vehicle.
