DA retains ward 2 Thabazimbi-seat 

Thabazimbi – The Democratic Alliance (DA) retained their ward 2 seat in the Thabazimbi Local Municipality after polling the highest number of votes in a closely contested by-election, held on Wednesday 27 November.

The purpose of the by-election was to fill a vacant position following the resignation of DA ward councillor and speaker of the Thabazimbi Council, Bertie Joubert.     

With 33.58% of the total votes, the DA emerged the winner of the election while Freedom Front Plus (VF Plus) came in second with 28.45%. The African National Congress (ANC) polled the third highest number of votes followed by the Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) and the Thabazimbi Ratepayers Association. 

Following the announcement of the results, the DA’s Tokkie Swanepoel was appointed councillor for ward 2. Jacques Smalle, the DA’s provincial leader in Limpopo, expressed optimism that Tokkie would serve the community well. “We have complete faith in our new councillor, who together with the DA caucus in Thabazimbi are ready to serve residents with renewed vigour,” he said. 

Jacques said the results of the election revealed a growth of 1% of the DA’s support base in the area. “We would like to thank all voters who came out to support us and a special mention and appreciation must go out to the DA’s professional team who managed the by-election with dedicated commitment.”
