How to stay safe during a storm

Thabazimbi – The rainy season is here, bringing along the dangers of storms and lightning. Platinum Bushvelder spoke to Thabazimbi Fire Protection Association (TPFA) chairperson Gerrie Visagie about safety during a storm.

“First, you must know the difference between a storm watch and a storm warning. A storm watch means that conditions are favourable for the development of a storm, so beware and on high alert that there is a possibility of a storm. A storm warning means that severe storms have been observed and are currently active and are issued by the South African Weather Service. When a warning is issued, pay attention to information regarding the description, direction and the times issued in the warning,” Gerrie said.

Lightning and storms go hand in hand. Lighting is extremely dangerous – so keep yourself and your family safe.

• If lightning develops, go indoors and stay there. 
• Plug out all appliances and do not plug them back in until the storm has passed. 
• Avoid bathing or showering when there is lightning activity. 
• Keep pets calm by closing all doors, windows and curtains and allow them to seek safety in a safe environment.
• Do not seek shelter under trees, powerlines or telephone lines.
• Refrain from touching metal objects.
