Limpopo achieves 3.8% matric pass rate improvement

Thabazimbi – The Limpopo Province’s class of 2019 recorded a 3.8% improvement in the matric pass rate when compared the class of 2018. 

This has given stakeholders in the education sector, particularly basic education minister Angie Motshekga, hope for further improvement in 2020 and beyond. 

Announcing the national matric results on Tuesday 7 January in Johannesburg, Motshekga highlighted the positive aspects of Limpopo’s performance.    

“In 2019, a total of 156,884 distinctions were achieved. The main contributors towards passes with distinctions were KwaZulu-Natal with 41,910; Gauteng with 37,422; Western Cape with 24,704; Eastern Cape with 15,745 and Limpopo with 13,312,” she said. 

“It is remarkable to note that the Eastern Cape, KwaZulu-Natal and Limpopo, the three most rural provinces in the country, produced a combined total of 70,967 distinctions, which is equivalent to 45.2%,” she added. 

She explained that Limpopo, KwaZulu-Natal, Gauteng and Eastern Cape collectively registered the highest numbers of candidates who wrote matric examinations.
