Doing away with illegal dumpsites 

Thabazimbi – The collaboration between Thabazimbi Local Municipality (TLM), private companies and community members has resulted in better waste management methods at dumping sites. 

Significant headway has also been made towards bringing back the sparkle to roadside areas that had become an eyesore because of illegal dumping activities.  

In Thabazimbi, personnel from ArcelorMittal have been assisting with sorting out waste inside the dumping site for more than two weeks now.       

Additionally, TLM has requested a tractor loader backhoe (TLB) and a tipper truck to assist with cleaning up the illegal dumping along the sides of the Dwaalboom-road that is adjacent to the dumping site.

“Anglo American Platinum’s Amandelbult Complex is assisting at the Northam dumping site,” TLM director of Community Services Segale Pilane said. 

Godisang Thabazimbi Community Development Trust also intends to lend a helping hand. 

Personnel from the trust are waiting for a presentation from TLM on the state of the dumpsites before deciding on how they can render their assistance. 

TLM will also explain the challenges being caused by illegal dumping as well as the resources required to address this crisis during a presentation to mining companies on Tuesday 3 March. 

Although the compactor truck belonging to TLM is not functioning, this is just a temporary setback. While the truck is undergoing repairs, skips are being emptied manually. 

TLM expressed their gratitude to community members and all stakeholders for joining hands and working towards better waste management.
