Illegal firearm lands two in hot water

Sunrise Park/ Rustenburg – Two suspects arrested in Sunrise Park on Friday 27 March appeared before the Rustenburg Magistrates’ Court on 30 March regarding charges related to possession of an unlicensed firearm.

The suspects, aged 21 and 33 respectively, were nabbed after police operatives from the Boitekong SAPS Visible Policing unit acted on a tip-off from the community. Police stopped and searched their vehicle at around 19:50 near Sunrise Clinic. They discovered a .38 special revolver loaded with seven live rounds of ammunition hidden in the vehicle.

“The suspects were arrested and detained after failing to provide the relevant papers authorising them to own the firearm,” police spokesperson captain Sam Tselanyane said.

Meanwhile, North West provincial commissioner lieutenant general Sello Kwena has urged community members to respond to the nationwide firearm amnesty before the 31 May 2020 deadline.
