Suspected poacher shot and killed

Northam – A 30-year old man, suspected of illegal hunting activities, was shot and killed on a farm outside Lephalale on Sunday 26 April at around 12:30.

A farmworker – allegedly responsible for killing the man – has since been arrested and appeared before the Lephalale Magistrates’ Court on a charge of murder on 28 April. The man was released on R5,000 bail and the case was postponed to 3 July.

According to police investigations, the deceased and two other men were spotted by nature conservation rangers - conducting illegal hunting activities on the farm. Bags containing pieces of dry game meat, remains of a gemsbok as well as hunting tools were found in the trio’s possession. However, as they were being escorted towards a van, the three men managed to escape before they disappeared into nearby bushes.

Police spokesperson brigadier Motlafela Mojapelo said: “While searching for the three men, the rangers heard some gunshots and rushed to the scene. On arrival, they discovered that one of the alleged illegal hunters had been shot by a farm employee. Police and medical emergency services were informed about the incident and the man was certified dead on scene.”

Investigations continue.
