Illegal mining – R2.6 million chrome bust

Mogwase – Rodney Molotsi (57) was arrested on Saturday 30 May for illegal mining activities and appeared before the Mogwase Magistrates’ Court on Monday where he was granted R2,000 bail.

During his arrest, trucks loaded with 170 tonnes of chrome estimated to be worth about R2.6 million were seized by members of the Hawks. Hawks North West spokesperson captain Tlangelani Rikhotso said personnel from their unit were assisted by members of the Rustenburg Flying Squad, the Department of Mineral Resources and a team from the South African National Defence Force (SANDF).

“Upon arrival at one of the sites, some of the suspects spotted the police and fled the scene. One suspect was apprehended,” Rikhotso said. “He was arrested on charges of illegal mining and further charges cannot be ruled out.”

Investigations continue.
