Our municipality is not walking the talk! [Letter to the editor]

Thabazimbi – I am unhappy at how the Thabazimbi Local Municipality (TLM) failed to adhere to the important COVID-19 regulations during a meeting we held with them as residents.

It is one thing to always talk about safety and quite another to implement measures to curb the spread of the dangerous pandemic.

A meeting organised by the municipality to give the National Home Builders Registration Council (NHBRC) an opportunity to inform residents about the by-laws regulating the construction of houses, was an example of how the municipality has been flouting the COVID-19 regulations.

The was no screening whatsoever as people were arriving at the venue. Also, there was no hand sanitiser.

The venue was in a dilapidated state – a situation that puts all those who attended in harm’s way. The roof looked like it would crumble any time. What if it had caved in? A bat fell on one of the community members. Tongue in cheek… this particular bat (in my opinion) has nothing to do with COVID-19!

That the meeting had to be stopped before we could discuss important issues was hardly a surprise. We had to stop the meeting because it was not adhering to the clearly laid down COVID-19 regulations. This is a sad reflection on the municipality and just makes you wonder if they took this meeting – or any of us attending – seriously at all!

Imagine driving a good 350km to attend a meeting that eventually fails to take place. What a waste of time and effort!
