Child rapist handed life sentence

Letlhabile/ Brits – A 33-year-old man was sentenced to life in prison by the Brits Regional Court on Wednesday 30 September after he was found guilty on three counts of rape. 

Evidence produced in the court linked Johannes Toi Joubert to three rape incidents which occurred from May 2014 to October 2015. Joubert was arrested on Monday 3 August 2015 at his home in Letlhabile outside Brits following an intensive investigation led by sergeant Boitumelo Rakabe from the Brits Family Violence, Child Protection and Sexual Offences (FCS) unit.   

Before the long arm of the law caught up with him, Joubert targeted minor victims aged 8 to 16. 
“As part of his method of committing the crimes, the accused hid and waited for unsuspecting school-going children in the bushy and secluded areas of Maboloka village, Centreville and Block F,” police spokesperson colonel Adéle Myburgh said. “He would then grab and verbally threaten the children before raping them. Through forensic evidence, investigators managed to link the accused to three cases that were reported from May 2014 to October 2015.”
