INVESTING IN LOCAL COMMUNITIES

Moruleng – Responding to President Cyril Ramaphosa’s call for private partners to address the challenges of water and sanitation at schools and improve access to quality primary health care, Siyanda Bakgatla Platinum Mine (SBPM) invested more than 15 million in  the community to do just that. As part of the investment plan SBPM handed over four schools ablution facilities and two clinics as well as medical equipment on Friday 6 November.

During a prestigious ceremony, one of the facilities which was handed over, by SBPM Executive Head of Sustainable Development Hope Tyira,was Nkonong Secondary School. The partnership between SBPM and the North West Department of Education also resulted in three ablution facilities being built at Mokgalwana Primary School, Makuka Secondary School and Sedibelo Secondary School – all located in Bakgatla-Ba-Kgafela villages. 

Each ablution block has eight flush toilets and four handwash basins for females and four flush toilets and four handwash basins for males. The construction created more than 30 job opportunities for locals.

In line with SBPM’S values, we are committed to foster good relationships with our stakeholders and local communities. Our goal is to grow a sustainable business that will in turn also support sustainable local communities. 

“Sustainability means access to quality learning and teaching, job opportunities for host communities, improved infrastructure, and access to basic primary health care,” said SBPM Executive Head of Sustainable Development Hope Tyira.

SBPM in conjunction with the North West Department of Health upgraded the Modderkuil and Kraalhoek Clinics to improve the quality of primary health care and enable the department to achieve the ideal clinic status. Front-line healthcare workers at the clinics received medical equipment to provide quality care and service in fighting the COVID-19 pandemic. 

Local small, medium, and micro enterprises benefitted from these projects as more than 50 job opportunities were created. These investments form part of SBPM’s Social and Labour Plan (SLP) projects and more than R40 million has been spent on development initiatives in our host communities.

We are very proud to be handing over these projects to government and our local communities and urge our community members to take care of these assets as a 
lifetime legacy.
