Tips to prevent hijackings and robberies

Thabazimbi – Too often members of the community fall victim to crimes like hijacking, house, and business robberies. The South African Police Service (SAPS) has a few tips that may help keep you safe.

HIJACKINGS

• Avoid travelling alone at night.
• Do not stop vehicles near hijacking spots or any secluded area.
• Always be alert when driving and if you suspect being followed drive to the nearest police station or call the SAPS emergency number 10111.
• Do not pick up hitchhikers – particularly when you are alone.
• Avoid distractions such as a mobile phone or drinking alcohol.
• Increase caution at intersections, watch people loitering near your car, and beware of any sudden activity around you.

HOUSE ROBBERIES

• Always be on the lookout for suspicious persons and vehicles in the neighbourhood.
• Enhance security by fitting access doors with security gates and installing burglar bars on all windows.
• Request neighbours to keep an eye on your property if you go away for an extended period.
• Do not open gates and doors to strangers.
• Check references of domestic staff, gardeners, and contractors before granting access to the premises.

BUSINESS ROBBERIES

• Limit the amount of money kept on the premises.
• Be on the lookout for suspicious customers.
• Late opening hours are not recommended.
• Avoid being alone, especially at night.
• Do not open for anyone after business hours.
