Brits – A 23-year-old man and a 16-year-old girl appeared before the Brits Magistrates’ Court on Monday 23 November on charges related to assaulting their week-old baby. 

The couple was arrested after the baby, which is now in the care of social workers, was found with bruises on its face and upper body. A community member reported the alleged abuse to the police while the couple was staying together in the Elandsfontein area of Brits.  

“The male accused is not the baby’s biological father. Preliminary investigations into the matter revealed that the accused allegedly started to assault the baby a week after he was born,” police spokesperson brigadier Sabata Mokgwabone said.    

In a separate incident, a 45-year-old man is being accused of sexually assaulting two former employees in two separate incidents which occurred between October and November. Moses Seokane from Jericho village, who also appeared before the Brits Magistrates’ Court on the same date, is being charged with sexual assault. 
The complainants allege that on Sunday 

1 November, Seokane sexually assaulted them at around 15:20 while the three were travelling towards Jericho in his car. “Subsequent to the court appearance, the accused was released on R1,000 bail. He will appear in court again on 10 February in 2021,” said police spokesperson brigadier Sabata Mokgwabone. Investigations continue. 

District commissioner of Bojanala platinum sub-district 1 major general Modisagaarekwe Mosimanegape, condemned the two incidents and applauded the Brits Family Violence, Child Protection and Sexual Offences (FCS) Unit for bringing to book the alleged perpetrators of crimes against women and children.
