10 WAYS YOU CAN
MAKE A DIFFERENCE

“Be the change you want to see in the world.”
Mahatma Gandhi

With the hustle and bustle of our everyday lives, people have become accustomed to the ‘everyone for themselves’ mindset.
There is so much need in the world and now, more than ever before, we need to stand together to bring about positive change in our communities… But where to start? Here are some ideas...

1.VOLUNTEER
People choose to volunteer for a variety of reasons. Contact non-profit organisations in your area and find out if they need volunteers. Volunteering can help you make friends, learn new skills, and even make you feel happier and healthier.

2. GATHER CLOTHING FROM YOUR NEIGHBOURS AND DONATE IT TO A LOCAL SHELTER
Many organisations collect anything from clothes and furniture to second-hand books and furniture that they sell to raise funds for their cause. Others collect these items to give to those in need. So, clean out your cupboards and throw out that dress that you haven’t worn in the past three years. Donate last year’s gift that you haven’t even taken out of the box yet. Every item might make a difference.

3. DONATE BLOOD
The South African National Blood Service (SANBS) provides an essential service within South Africa by collecting and distributing blood to those in need. By donating blood, you are giving someone a very precious gift – the gift of life. Every unit of blood can save a minimum of three lives.

4. HELP COOK AND/OR SERVE A MEAL AT A HOMELESS SHELTER
Find out which organisations provide a warm plate of food to the homeless and offer to help them cook. They will surely appreciate the extra pair of hands.

5. PICK UP GROCERIES OR MEDICINE FOR AN ELDERLY PERSON
During these unprecedented times, the elderly should avoid busy shopping centres as far as possible. Offer to go shopping for them and drop off their groceries at their front door.

6. GIVE OUT AT LEAST ONE COMPLIMENT A DAY
No one can deny that receiving a compliment from someone just makes your day a bit better. If you see someone that looks great or is really good at something – tell them! It might brighten up their day.

7. OFFER TO CUT AN ELDERLY NEIGHBOUR’S GRASS
If there are any elderly living in your area that you know is unable to tend to their own garden – offer to do it for them. Even just cutting the grass can lighten their burden.

8. SAY THANK YOU
Thank a nurse, teacher, cashier, or anyone on a job well done or an act of kindness! If you receive great service from someone – tell them.

9. LET SOMEONE CUT IN LINE IN FRONT OF YOU
Let an elderly or disabled – or even the mother with the two kids – cut in front of you in the queue. By saving them those two minutes you will make their day!

10. DONATE OLD TOYS TO THE POLICE’S FAMILY VIOLENCE, CHILD PROTECTION & SEXUAL OFFENCES UNIT (FCS)
The FCS often serves as a temporary haven for very traumatised children. By creating a better environment, you can make this experience a little more bearable for them.

Now that you have an idea where to start – go out and make a difference!
