What a dump!

Northam – What more is there to say about the Northam landfill site? Platinum Bushvelder started reporting on the hazardous smoke emanating from the site as far back as 2019.

For a while, the smoke was controlled but the solutions were not sustainable. Businesses around the area are losing money because clients try to avoid the foul odour and clouds of smoke as far as possible. Those who live nearby can hardly breath during the evening and even the schools nearby are severely affected.
Various stakeholders have invested in cleaning the landfill.

 On Wednesday 17 March councillor David Gouveia met up with Siyanda Bakgatla Platinum Mine (SBPM) environmental manager Tendani Mufamadi to find lasting solutions to the problem. “We have to maintain sustainability, a short-term solution is not an option,” said Tendani.

Another growing problem that the landfill site faces is the fact that residents dump illegal waste. Just because it’s a rubbish dump, it doesn’t mean that you can just dump anything there. A local butchery recently dumped their expired meat there. 
Just what the dump needed! The smell of rotting meat to complete the revolting bouquet of odours. That is of course if the reclaimers don’t take it. There are specific ways to get rid of specific waste and residents are advised to make sure what is allowed to be dumped at the site.
