A man on a mission

Thabazimbi – Many a Thabazimbi-resident is on a first-name basis with Lucas Steel. It’s a familiar sight to see him repairing potholes around town. 
Potholes have become a serious point of discussion over recent years, they are not only an inconvenience and expense for motorists and municipalities – but deadly too.
Back in 1976, Lucas joined the Thabazimbi Local Municipality (TLM) team where he still earns his living. A mere two months on the job, he was promoted to roads foreman. 
“Our roads, and by default the safety of our commuters, weighs heavy on my heart,” Lucas said in an interview with Platinum Bushvelder. “One day I want to own my own company, hiring unemployed youth to help me fix the roads. I know all the roads, like the palm of my hands.”  
Applauding Lucas, Thabazimbi Rate Payers Association representative Tokkie Swanepoel said: “We are very thankful to you for going the extra mile. If every person in Thabazimbi only had half of the pride you have, we would be the best town in South Africa!”
Lucas still steams forward at the TLM and after work, by the sweat of his brow, he repairs the potholes.
