Serving communities

Northam – The South African Police Services (SAPS) in Northam demonstrated that their abilities go beyond fighting crime.

Mandela Day, commemorated annually on 18 July, is a global call to action for people to make their own positive imprint on the world. It is one day in the year that people across the globe stand together to serve the communities around them and work towards a better future. 

On Sunday 18 July, law enforcement agents, together with members of the Community Policing Forum (CPF) and the Youth Community Outreach Programme (YCOP) rolled up their sleeves and swept clean Venter and Ruby streets. Sergeant Fortune Madisa, constable Matome Mokgoko and constable Tebogo Manyane led this initiative as part of their 67 minutes of community service to commemorate Nelson Mandela Day.    

On 19 July, the same team visited the Northam RDP section to continue with their community service initiative.  Needy families were handed food parcels after several businesses in the area responded overwhelmingly to a call for assistance. The families each received 12,5kg of mealie meal, 10kg of rice, tinned fish and cooking oil.
