Shaking  things up

Thabazimbi – Thabazimbi experienced a light earthquake at around a quarter to one on Sunday morning, 10 October.

A light magnitude earthquake of 3.0 on the Richter scale, about 2.2km west of Thabazimbi at a depth of about 10km woke up several community members. A few took to social media to confirm if it was an earthquake they felt and shared their experiences.

In interviews the Platinum Bushvelder was told: 

“I woke up just past midnight with my dogs barking nonstop. They usually only bark when there is danger, so I immediately went to investigate.

As I walked towards the door, I heard a few loud thumps. It sounded like someone running past my window. I could not see anything.

The following morning, I learned that there was an earthquake. It could very well have been the reason behind my dogs’ barking.”

“I was still awake and watching television when it happened. The windows and doors started to rattle, and I immediately knew that it was an earthquake,” another community member said. 
Another report about the tremor said: 

“I was camping in my yard with my 6-year-old daughter. A heavy wind started blowing so I decided to wake her up and go inside. While I was busy packing up, the tent started to flap!”

Medivet Dierekliniek vet Dr Jamiela Barnard confirmed that animals can hear an earthquake long before it strikes, because some of their senses are much more developed and in tune than ours. They feel the magnetic movement before we can and hear the sound of the vibrations.

Thabazimbi Crisis Control’s Henk Havenga confirmed that no damage has been reported.
