Another freaking fire! [Letter to the editor]

Lately, while scrolling through social media, it seems like there is always a fire raging somewhere around Thabazimbi. How is this possible? 

Are people starting these fires deliberately or does it occur by accident? Even if you don’t follow the fire index, it must be logical that you cannot start any open fires. The grass is still dry as we haven’t had enough rain yet. The winds are strong – and it’s hot. Why would you even think of starting a fire or even throwing out a cigarette bud in an area that you know can easily catch fire.

With the rain season, lighting can also be a culprit in starting these runaway fires. Although you cannot prevent these fires, you can help to lessen the damage. If you see a fire, please report it. 

Don’t think… ‘well someone must have reported it already’ or it’s just a small fire. Be the person that reports it. Even if it has been reported 20 times, it’s better than everybody just thinking the next person will do it while the fire rages on… and on. 

I feel so bad for these great volunteers who selflessly fight these fires day after day – the least you can do is to not start fires and make sure all fires are reported.
