Lesedi needs a new wheelchair

Northam - Monene Sekhula experienced complications during the birth of her son Lesedi Sekhula. Approximately four months after his birth they noticed that something wasn’t right as Lesedi couldn’t sit up by himself.

It was later suspected that Lesedi had sustained brain damage during birth, and because of this, he is unable to walk or talk. Over the years, Lesedi and his mother created their own form of sign language to communicate.

Today, Lesedi is 10 years old, but it has not been an easy road for him and his mother. Platinum Bushvelder interviewed Monene on Tuesday 4 April 2023 to find out what they need to make their lives a little easier.

“Lesedi can only eat certain foods as he struggles to swallow. Even pap is a no-go for him—no matter how soft you make it. His digestive system is also not functioning properly, and taking a bath is no easy task,” Monene said.

Monene would like to place Lesedi in a special needs school, but she is unemployed as she looks after her son full-time. Another challenge is that the special needs schools she has investigated cannot take him in because he cannot feed himself.

The family is also facing another problem; Lesedi’s wheelchair is broken, and he is in dire need of a new wheelchair.
