Long path to recovery for captain Nkuna

Thabazimbi - On Friday 7 July four South African Police Services (SAPS) members responded to a distress call involving domestic violence at a residence on 8th Avenue.  

Upon their arrival at the residence where a woman requested protection from her husband against whom she had a restraining order, captain Mpandeni Nkuna, constable Freddy Modiba, sergeant Sello Somo, and constable Maite Sibanda were refused entry by the husband.
Upon inspection Captain Nkuna and constable Modiba discovered that the accused had barricaded himself in a car. 

The man resorted to consuming petrol and dousing himself with it. In their attempt to retrieve the man from the vehicle, an explosion occurred in which captain Nkuna and constable Modiba sustained serious burn wounds. 

Constable Modiba is currently recovering at home, while captain Nkuna, who suffered more severe injuries, was transferred to Mediclinic Muelmed Hospital in Pretoria where he is having his burns treated by a specialist. 

The man, who stood accused of attempted murder, succumbed to his injuries at the Garden City Clinic on Thursday 13 July. Our sincerest condolences to the loved ones affected by this tragic incident.
