R510 claims two lives

Thabazimbi – In a tragic vehicle accident on Saturday 22 July 2023 at approximately 11:00, a motorcyclist and a sedan collided head-on on the R510 outside Thabazimbi, close to Thaba Nkwe Bushveld Inn.

A group of bikers on a breakfast run from Bela-Bela passed through Thabazimbi and were on their way to Vaalwater, planning to later return to Bela-Bela. The biker at the lead and the oncoming vehicle (driver and four passengers), crashed head-on. According to Trauma Rescue industrial manager Hennie Madeley, the motorcyclist was declared dead on the scene. His bike’s fuel tank caught fire, which led to an explosion. The vehicle also caught fire, and soon the fire spread through the veld next to the road.

Thaba Fire and Rescue director Kobus Malan said: “When emergency personnel arrived on the scene, they worked quickly to remove the occupants from the burning vehicle.”

The driver sustained serious injuries, and sadly later passed away in hospital. The passengers sustained minor wounds.
