Limpopo residents fear job losses over new Tobacco Bill 

Limpopo - In the Greater Capricorn District of Limpopo, locals expressed concerns to the Health Committee about potential job losses if the current Tobacco Products and Electronic Delivery Systems Control Bill (B33-2022) is passed. The concerns arose during public hearings, the last of which took place at Polokwane’s Jack Botes Hall on Sunday 17 September 2023. 

The Bill received mixed feedback. Many opposed it, fearing it could harm job security, especially for small traders selling individual cigarettes and emerging tobacco farmers. Concerns were also raised about the proposal for plain packaging on all tobacco products, which could boost the illicit trade market. Some urged the government to focus on existing rules and tackle the black market.
Others called for more consultations, suggesting that the Bill be discussed further with the National Economic Development and Labour Council.

However, there was also support for the Bill. Advocates praised its protective measures for children, pregnant women, and non-smokers from second-hand smoke. The proposed regulations on electronic delivery systems were also seen as a necessary step. Critics argued that the tobacco industry prioritises profit over people’s health.

The Tobacco Bill has stirred significant debate in Limpopo, with valid concerns on both sides. While many fear the economic repercussions, particularly for small traders and the rise in illicit trade, others see it as a positive step towards public health and welfare. As the discourse continues, it’s clear that a balanced approach, considering both economic and health implications, is crucial for the well-being of the Limpopo community and beyond.
