Destructive and utterly unenlightened

In the early morning hours of Monday 20 November 2023, around 01:15, residents near the Thabazimbi cemetery were awakened by a loud bang. The following morning, the absence of power revealed that the noise was not caused by any supernatural occurrence. Instead, it appears an individual recklessly attempted to steal a length of cable using a hacksaw.

This act is not only highly dangerous for the perpetrator but also causes significant harm to the local economy by vandalising vital electrical infrastructure. Such actions place an immense strain on households and businesses already coping with limited access to water and electricity during load shedding periods. By around 9 am the same day, a cherry picker and the municipality’s electrical services team were on site to repair the damaged power line.

Vandalism of infrastructure creates a detrimental cycle. It hampers the municipality’s ability to generate revenue and recover financially, leading to a reduced capacity to maintain infrastructure. This, in turn, negatively impacts the municipality’s cash flow. At the end of the day, everyone in Thaba and surrounds bears the brunt.

The responsibility lies with our community to vigilantly protect our infrastructure. Working with the South African Police Service (SAPS) and local security groups is crucial to eliminate vandalism and theft, which deteriorate the quality of life in our town. The people of Thabazimbi have repeatedly demonstrated their solidarity in overcoming challenges related to water and electricity shortages, affirming their commitment to supporting each other through these difficulties.
