Primary school learner seriously injured on school grounds

Thabazimbi – On Wednesday, 22 November, a Grade 3 learner of Laerskool Thabazimbi suffered life-changing injuries when his left hand was mauled by the blades of an industrial lawnmower on the school grounds during break time.

The details surrounding the accident remain unclear; however, it is known that the boy lost all the fingers on his left hand and severely damaged the palm. The severity of the injury necessitated immediate medical attention. The child was transported to Life Peglerae Hospital in Rustenburg, where he underwent extensive reconstructive surgery.

On Tuesday, 28 November, Platinum Bushvelder spoke with the chairperson of the school’s governing body. The chairperson revealed that an independent investigation into the accident has been initiated, and that the results and findings will be shared upon completion.

Regarding the wellbeing of the learners affected by the traumatic event, a notice from the school to the parents reads: “Counselling is an ongoing process, and any pupil in need of guidance or professional assistance is welcome to contact the school counsellor”. 

This incident has raised concerns about safety in school environments and highlighted the need for stringent safety measures to protect children.
