Busy weekend day for archery!
Thabazimbi - Saturday 2 December 2023 presented a tough challenge for archers with 10 hours to finish 100 targets! Elgro River Lodge, Potchefstroom, North West, played host to a 3-D fun shoot with a twist... 100 x 3-D Challenge, two arrows per target with 10 hours to do 10 x normal ‘one day’ archery tournaments. It implies 200 arrows to fly within a 10-hour ‘window’.
The Limpopo Sports Confederation held their annual AGM at Zororo Lodge, Polokwane, on the same day. Limpopo representatives were Barnie van Tonder for Africa Genesis Archery (AGA) & Centre Shot (Christ-centred archery training in schools) from Mokopane, and Melanie Erasmus, SANIFAA representative (Phalaborwa).
Additionally, the Limpopo Department of Sport, Arts and Culture’s sports presentation awards were held at ‘The Ranch’ Lodge in Polokwane. The Gala evening highlighted the participation of all sports to be represented and the government’s effort to advocate a high standard of excellence. It is not only uplifting communities and introducing sport as building bridges between cultures but also sustaining high standards for excellence in sport.
Three archers from Thabazimbi Archery club were nominated for the Sportsman and Sportswoman categories of the Limpopo Sports awards: HJ Swanepoel, and the mother and daughter duo, Mathilda and Maya Broekhuizen shared the stage. A win for Thabazimbi Archery was certain...
The winning duo of HJ Swanepoel as Limpopo Sportsman 2023 and Maya Broekhuizen as Limpopo Sportswoman of the year 2023 brought archery to new heights. One town in the Limpopo province, Thabazimbi, with 2 Limpopo sport winners; what a privilege and a blessing for the Thabazimbi Archery club!
Proud is an understatement, as HJ Swanepoel (4th cap Protea archer) was awarded the Limpopo Sportsman of the year 2023. HJ Swanepoel is no stranger to Protea colours. He has represented South Africa in 3-D, Field, and Indoor championships. He clinched this award with his Indoor gold medal in London, UK, in February 2023 and his silver medal in July 2023, in Windhoek, Namibia, as part of the African Regional Field Archery Competition (ARFAC 2023).
It was a great moment for the mother and daughter duo, Mathilda and Maya Broekhuizen to be nominated and standing together as nominees for the Sportswoman of the year 2023 on the same stage. Still a young sport star, Maya Broekhuizen (17) rose to stardom by winning a gold in her first international archery competition in the adult category in Windhoek, Namibia, as part of the ARFAC 2023. She was awarded the Woman Sports School Athlete of the year in November 2023, and now a win as the Sportswoman of the year 2023 in Limpopo!
Double trouble, or in this case double wins; a great win for the sport of archery. Well done, HJ Swanepoel and Maya Broekhuizen!
