Tragic drowning incident during ritual in Crocodile River

Northam – The Crocodile River, just outside Northam, became the scene of a tragic drowning this week. A man, engaged in what is believed to be a religious ritual, lost his life in the river’s treacherous waters.

Brigadier Hlulani Mashaba, spokesperson for the Limpopo South African Police Service (SAPS), provided details of the event. “On the afternoon of Saturday 27th January 2024, the Northam police were alerted by community members to a drowning incident in the Crocodile River. An enquiry case docket has been opened to investigate the circumstances surrounding this tragedy,” brigadier Mashaba explained.

Despite the dedicated efforts of the police search and rescue teams, the victim has yet to be located. “We are continuing our search operation,” brigadier Mashaba confirmed on Wednesday 31 January 2024.

The search efforts have been extensive, involving multiple teams. The SAPS Water Wing, local police units, and emergency personnel have all been part of the operation. The search has been complicated by challenging conditions, including the presence of hippos.

In a stark contrast to the ongoing search efforts, the area where the victim was swept away continued to be a hub of activity. Several individuals were observed engaging in various traditional rituals, while others were fishing, seemingly undisturbed by the recent tragedy.

Amid these incidents, major general Jan Scheepers, the acting provincial commissioner of Police in Limpopo, has issued a stern warning. He urges the community to avoid dangerous activities in perilous waters, such as swimming or conducting spiritual practices in rivers, dams, or streams known for their hazards.

This incident marks the second ritual-related drowning in the Limpopo province this month. On Sunday 21 January 2024, a 48-year-old man, a prophet from Atok in the Apel policing area, tragically drowned during spiritual prayer activities. Major general Scheepers’s call to the community highlights the need for safety and caution in such environments to prevent further loss of life.
