Girl raped after party 

Northam – The Northam police arrested a 29-year-old male suspect for the alleged rape of a 15-year-old girl on Saturday 27 January 2024. 

The girl was on a date with her boyfriend, accompanied by their two friends (also a couple). Together, the four went to a party at a tavern in Northam, on Friday evening, 26 January. 

According to police reports, the four youngsters were under the influence of alcohol. After the party, they went to a friend’s house for a sleepover. They all slept in the same room. The girl and her boyfriend slept on the floor, while the other couple slept on the bed. Reports indicate that the girl’s boyfriend woke up early and left her to sleep.

According to South African Police Service (SAPS) spokesperson, colonel Malesela Ledwaba, “The victim reported that she woke up at around 05:00 next to an unknown man. She realised she was naked and felt as though she had sexual intercourse. She confirmed that she did not consent to sexual activities.” 

A rape case was reported to the Northam police, and transferred to the Thabazimbi Family Violence Child Protection and Sexual Offenses Unit, who traced the suspect and arrested him on the same day. Investigations continue. 

“Parents and guardians are urged to take extra care for their children to curb the scourge of sexual related offences – especially against the children,” major general Jan Scheepers voiced.
