Limpopo illegal mining crackdown

Limpopo – In a crackdown on illegal mining operations across Limpopo, the South African Police Service (SAPS) and the South African National Defence Force (SANDF) have joined forces under the banner of Operation Vala Umgodi, resulting in the arrest of 14 suspects and the confiscation of key mining equipment. The operation, carried out on Thursday, 22 February 2024, targeted illegal mining sites scattered across the province’s five districts, signalling a robust response to the growing issue of illegal mining.

The arrested individuals, twelve men and two women aged 22 to 52 years, were apprehended in a series of coordinated raids designed to disrupt the illegal mining operations that have been plaguing the region. Colonel Maledela Ledwaba emphasised the significance of the operation in combating the illegal mining menace that threatens the province’s economy and environment.

Among the confiscated items were an excavator and three tipper trucks, collectively valued at millions of rands. The suspects are set to appear before various Magistrates’ Courts, facing charges related to illegal mining.
