Limpopo hit by devastating floods and drownings

Limpopo – The Limpopo Province has faced a series of tragic events as heavy rains, thunderstorms, and severe flooding have hit the region since the start of the new year. These weather conditions have caused widespread damage, leading to multiple drowning incidents and significant destruction to infrastructure. The three most affected districts — Capricorn, Mopani, and Waterberg — have reported widespread devastation, particularly in Waterberg, where the impact has been most severe.

Drowning incidents and animal attacks
The provincial commissioner of the South African Police Service in Limpopo, lieutenant general Thembi Hadebe, issued a stern warning to parents and residents to ensure the safety of their children, particularly during the rainy season. The warning follows several tragic drowning incidents and attacks by wild animals in rivers infested with crocodiles and hippopotamuses.

The most recent incident occurred on 4 January 2025, when two 16-year-old boys were swept away by the flowing Luvuvhu River in the Xikundu area of the Saselemane policing area. Despite the efforts of divers, the boys’ bodies were recovered from the river.

Another tragic incident took place in the Waterberg District on 1 January 2025, when three people — two young boys and an adult — drowned in Phalala River. The search team was forced to halt their efforts after encountering a herd of hippopotamuses and two charging animals. 

Severe flooding and infrastructure damage
In addition to the drowning incidents, the heavy rains have caused widespread flooding, particularly in the Waterberg, Mopani, and Capricorn districts. A total of 13 drowning incidents have been reported across these areas, including two in Blouberg, four in Polokwane, and two in Waterberg involving boys from Viena and Marken (Monareng village).

The Jabulani informal settlement in Thabazimbi has been severely flooded, affecting 400 households and disrupting services at the Thabazimbi Hospital. 

We extend our deepest condolences to the families affected by these tragic events. The loss of loved ones, particularly young children, is heartbreaking. As we continue to assess the situation, we urge all residents to stay informed, take necessary precautions, and heed the safety warnings issued by authorities.
