TRUCK DRIVER PERISHES IN SMASHBLOCK FLOOD INCIDENT

Smashblock/ Northam – On Monday 13 January 2025, tragedy struck in the small community of Smashblock near Northam. A truck carrying baked bread to market was swept away by powerful stormwaters while attempting to cross a bridge, around 13:30. 

According to reports, the truck was caught in the fast-flowing stream and carried away by the water. Emergency services were alerted shortly after 14:10, and responders rushed to the scene. Upon arrival, they found a harrowing sight: a man lying face down on the ground and another sitting near the stranded truck, approximately one kilometre apart.

Despite the best efforts of emergency personnel, the 43-year-old driver was declared dead at the scene. His body was taken to the Bela-Bela government mortuary. The truck’s passenger, a 34-year-old man, escaped without injuries but was visibly shaken.

The rescue operation involved multiple teams, including Northam SAPS, Thaba Fire and Rescue, Amandelbult Fire and Rescue, Thabazimbi Local Municipality’s Fire Department, state ambulance services, and Amandelbult Complex Security Services. 

The driver’s final moments are almost too painful to imagine. Surrounded by the relentless torrent of water, he must have fought with every ounce of his being to survive. His loss is deeply felt by all who knew him, and our hearts go out to his family and loved ones during this difficult time.

This tragedy serves as a sobering reminder of the dangers posed by heavy rains and flooding. Authorities urge all residents to exercise extreme caution near water crossings during storms and to prioritise safety. The community mourns the loss of a life cut short and extends its condolences to the grieving family.
