ILLEGAL MINING CRACKDOWN YIELDS ARRESTS IN THABAZIMBI

Thabazimbi – A focused operation targeting illegal mining activities in Limpopo has led to the arrest of 27 individuals, underscoring the growing challenge of illicit mining in the region. The arrests, conducted between 13 and 14 January 2025, were part of a coordinated effort by the multidisciplinary Vala Umgodi Task Teams.

These operations, spearheaded by the South African Police Service (SAPS) in collaboration with the South African National Defence Force (SANDF), Department of Home Affairs, and other partners, reflect a determined approach to tackling illegal mining and included arresting individuals contravening the Immigration Act.

Lieutenant colonel Stephen Thakeng confirmed that 15 suspects were apprehended in Thabazimbi and two in Mahwelereng, both within the Waterberg District. Additional arrests occurred in Seshego (Capricorn District) and other areas, including Thohoyandou and Westenburg.
