Drug smuggling dream crushed: police intercept R15m dagga load

Northam – An intelligence-driven operation led to a breakthrough for law enforcement in Northam resulting in the interception of a truck carrying dagga worth over R15 million on Wednesday, 7 February 2025.

A 35-year-old South African male was arrested after the South African Police Service (SAPS) in Limpopo, working with the Community Policing Forum (CPF) and Rural Safety units, seized 44 bales of compressed dagga hidden among bedding, pillows, and mattresses in the cargo hold of a truck.

According to brigadier Hlulani Mashaba, detectives in Northam received a crucial tip-off about a truck transporting illicit goods along the R511 Brits road, en route to Zambia. A swift and coordinated response saw police setting up surveillance near the Brits-Northam junction. At approximately 21:00, the targeted truck was stopped for inspection, revealing the illicit cargo.

The seized dagga, weighing approximately 45 kilograms per bale, has an estimated street value of R8,000 per kilogram, amounting to a staggering R15,840,000. The truck driver was arrested on the spot, and both the vehicle and its illegal load were confiscated.

Limpopo provincial commissioner, lieutenant general Thembi Hadebe, praised the joint operation, emphasising that such successes significantly disrupt drug trafficking networks and safeguard communities from the harmful effects of narcotics.

The suspect appeared before the Northam Magistrate’s Court on Monday 10 February 2025, facing charges of dealing in drugs. Further investigations are underway to determine the full extent of the smuggling operation.
