MALARIA ALERT: One Case Reported in Thabazimbi – Stay Vigilant, But Don’t Panic

Thabazimbi – The Thabazimbi Local Municipality (TLM) has issued a public alert following a confirmed case of malaria in the area. When we reached out to TLM for clarification on whether the individual contracted the disease locally or during travel, they stated that they do not have that information. However, residents are urged to take precautionary measures, particularly after recent heavy rains created ideal breeding conditions for mosquitoes.

What is malaria? 
Malaria is a serious disease caused by parasites transmitted through the bites of infected Anopheles mosquitoes. Symptoms typically include fever, chills, headache, nausea, and flu-like illness. It is not contagious from person to person but can spread quickly in mosquito-prone environments.

Limpopo Department of Health confirms increased malaria risk
Although the Limpopo Department of Health (LDOH) has also warned of heightened malaria risk across the Limpopo province due to recent rainfall, they did not mention Thabazimbi in particular. In a statement released on 29 January 2025, the Department confirmed 557 malaria cases and three deaths in the 2024/25 period. 

While the recent malaria case in Thabazimbi is a concern, there is no confirmation that the infection was contracted locally. By staying informed and taking preventive steps, residents can protect themselves and their families without unnecessary panic.
