WHEN THE GIVERS NEED HELP: A call to support Theo & Geraldine
Thabazimbi – Just outside Thabazimbi, in the Maroelasfontein farming community, there are names that stand out — people who have always been ready to lend a hand, offer support, and uplift those around them. Among those names are Theo and Geraldine van Wyk.
For years, they have been more than just neighbours; they have been pillars of strength to those in need. Now, the time has come for the community to stand by them.
A Life-Altering Diagnosis
What began as a routine hospital visit in March 2024 turned into an unimaginable ordeal. Theo had been scheduled for a minor procedure to remove a plate and two screws from his foot. However, just 30 minutes before surgery, he suffered a seizure. By sheer luck — or perhaps divine intervention — it happened in the hospital, surrounded by medical professionals who acted immediately. This unexpected event led to an MRI scan, revealing the devastating diagnosis: a brain tumour.
On 12 April 2024, Theo underwent a craniotomy to remove as much of the tumour as possible. The procedure was performed by a highly recommended neurosurgeon, and while the majority of the tumour was successfully removed, the biopsy results brought heartbreaking news—it was identified as a Grade 2 astrocytoma, a form of cancer. Though the surgery spared him from paralysis, it left him with impaired reading and writing abilities, forcing him to relearn these essential skills from scratch.
The Fight for Recovery
Despite the challenges, Theo remained determined to provide for his family. He resumed his work as a consultant at a nearby mine, but his battle was far from over. Six weeks of intense radiation followed, causing severe illness. By January 2025, he began chemotherapy, bravely completing the first round and concluding the second on February 19. Unfortunately, the effects of the treatments took a toll on his body, leaving his right leg weakened.
The most devastating blow came at the end of January when the mine, citing his health and limited ability to read and write, terminated his contract. A man who had always provided for his family and his workers was now left without an income at the very moment he needed stability the most.
A Financial and Emotional Struggle
To make matters worse, an insurance policy meant to cover dreaded disease and income protection refused to pay out due to a technicality. With mounting medical expenses and everyday living costs, the financial strain has added to an already overwhelming situation. In response, kind-hearted members of the community set up a BackaBuddy fundraising campaign to support Theo and Geraldine, ensuring they can maintain their medical aid and cover basic necessities.
Despite everything, Geraldine remains steadfast in her resilience. “We are blessed to be part of a community that truly cares,” she says. She does not want this to be a tale of hardship alone — she wants people to know that even in the face of great adversity, there is gratitude, hope, and the unwavering support of those around them.
