Van Der Walt family stands strong as assault trial nears

JUSTICE DELAYED, BUT NOT DENIED

 

Thabazimbi – The long-awaited trial of André Hoffman, accused of the brutal assault on 32-year-old Leon van der Walt, has been postponed yet again. The case, originally scheduled for 7 March 2025, will now proceed on 9 April 2025 for plea and trial. The assault, which took place on 24 September 2024 at a restaurant where Leon worked as a waiter, left him unconscious and severely injured. His recovery has been slow and painful, with persistent medical challenges such as brain swelling and debilitating headaches.

Hoffman, who was granted bail at R500 in November 2024, has had multiple delays in his legal proceedings. His attorney previously requested a postponement due to financial constraints, as Hoffman faces another legal matter in February 2025. Now, after yet another delay, the Van Der Walt family must wait even longer for justice to take its course.

A community that cares

Despite the frustration and setbacks, the Van Der Walt family remains strong, bolstered by unwavering community support. Monique van der Walt, speaking on behalf of the family, expressed deep gratitude to those who have stood by them during this trying time.

“We want to extend our heartfelt thanks to Uncle Christo and Aunt Wendy for their continuous support at every court appearance. Their words of encouragement and emotional strength have carried us through the toughest days,” Monique shared.

She also acknowledged Dr. Buys, who has been instrumental in Leon’s recovery journey, and Amanda McDonald for her unwavering assistance. “To everyone who has kept us in their prayers, sent us messages, or simply offered a comforting hug, we appreciate you more than words can say.”

Additionally, Leon’s employer, Lethabo Projects, was praised for their understanding and support throughout this difficult period.

“A special thank you to our families for their support. Your love and strength mean the world to us,” Monique added.

A long road ahead

While the family is eager for justice, they acknowledge that the legal process is slow and often frustrating. “We are holding onto hope,” Monique stated. “This case means everything to us. It’s been an incredibly rough journey, but we won’t give up.”
