Fire contained on Makoppa-Dwaalboom road

Makoppa – A potential disaster was narrowly averted on Wednesday morning, 23 July 2025, when a fire broke out along the Makoppa-Dwaalboom road just before 10:00.

The blaze was sparked when a bakkie lost a wheel while travelling. Sparks from the incident ignited dry grass on the road reserve, and the fire quickly spread into a nearby farm. Fortunately, thanks to the swift and coordinated efforts of Thaba Fire & Rescue — supported by local farmers — the fire was brought under control in time, with only a small area affected.

Three Thaba Fire & Rescue vehicles responded to the scene. The rest of the team was busy along the Kransberg road, conducting firebreak operations.

“We were lucky this time, but veldfire season is always a serious concern,” said Pierre Loots, CEO of Thaba Fire & Rescue. “We thank the community members who jumped in to help — it made a big difference.”

No injuries or structural damage were reported, but officials urge motorists and landowners to remain alert, especially during dry and windy conditions.
