Where do we draw the line?  [letter to the editor]

As residents of Northam, we understand that life comes with celebrations and, sadly, with funerals. Both are important parts of our community, and both deserve respect. However, what happened in Leeukoppie Street recently left many of us troubled.

A large tent was set up right in the middle of a public road, with loud music and traffic blocked off. The morning after, the street was left in a state: broken bottles, scattered litter, possible damage to water meters, and tent poles hammered into the tar. Whether this gathering was a joyful celebration or a solemn farewell, it still should never have been allowed to happen in this way.

There are community halls, churches, and venues in Northam that can host such gatherings without disrupting residents or damaging infrastructure. Blocking off a road, making noise into the early hours, and leaving a mess behind simply isn’t fair to the neighbours — and it sets a dangerous precedent.

We appeal to our municipality and councillors: please guide us clearly. What are the rules? Who gave permission? And how do we prevent this from happening again? Respect for people and respect for the law must go hand in hand.
