McLaren Circus brings 20 years of magic, laughter and lions to Thabazimbi!

Thabazimbi – Get ready to laugh, gasp, cheer and clap until your hands hurt, because McLaren Circus, South Africa’s very own big top spectacular, is rolling into town for two days only!

Celebrating 20 years of circus magic, McLaren Circus will pitch its famous red-and-blue tent at Thaba Park, Van der Bijl Street, on Monday, 27 October, and Tuesday, 28 October 2025, with shows starting at 6 PM sharp.

This year’s highlight is the incredible Russian Swing, performed by the international troupe X-Mak from Mongolia. Their heart-stopping act combines strength, balance and breathtaking mid-air somersaults that will leave audiences on the edge of their seats. From daring acrobats to graceful performers, from roaring tigers to giggling clowns, this is the kind of show that reminds everyone, young and old, that a little bit of wonder goes a long way.

The team at McLaren Circus shared their excitement with the Platinum Bushvelder. “We can’t wait to share our 20th anniversary celebration with the people of Thabazimbi. Every town we visit becomes part of our story, and Thabazimbi is next in line to make memories with us,” they said.

Behind all the colour and music lies a story of passion, perseverance and pure heart.

It all began on 24 March 2005, when a 21-year-old dreamer named David McLaren followed his lifelong passion and started McLaren Circus in a small hired tent at Blue Route Mall in Tokai, Cape Town. That first tent seated just 150 people. With a handful of artists from a local circus school, David took the ringmaster’s spot while his brother Duncan performed as the clown.

From those humble beginnings, the circus has grown into one of South Africa’s most beloved family traditions. Over the years, McLaren Circus has faced storms, triumphs and countless smiles. Today, it remains the only traditional travelling circus in Southern Africa, proudly touring all nine provinces without any sponsorship, relying entirely on the support of local communities.

The circus consults regularly with veterinarians across South Africa to maintain the highest standards.
