VIOLENT PROTESTERS ARRESTED

Thabazimbi – Two people aged 26 and 31 were arrested for malicious damage to property and public violence near Thabazimbi following police action on suspects involved in the recent spate of violent protests.

According to Colonel Moatshe Ngoepe, the arrest of the two followed the hijacking of five trucks of which two, including an ambulance, were set on fire. Seven people were also assaulted by a group of protesters along the Northam and Brits road on 20 June.

“The police were summoned, reacted swiftly and intervened until the situation was brought back to normality. The assaulted drivers were immediately taken to hospital for medical attention,” Ngoepe added.
The estimated damage caused during this incident is over R3million and the public order police unit is still monitoring the situation and more arrests are still expected.
