Thabazimbi – In celebration of Women’s Day 2025, the Waterberg Biosphere Reserve (WBR) and its partners gathered at Deo Gloria Primary School on Friday 8 August 2025 to honour the vital role women play in conservation, environmental stewardship, and community well-being.

Under the theme “Empowering Women for a Healthy Waterberg and Future”, the day highlighted the power of women in driving change – from protecting biodiversity to breaking social barriers. The event opened with a school clean-up led by Andre Mabokwane from the Waterberg Biosphere Youth Network, before a line-up of inspiring talks and practical demonstrations.

Speakers included SANParks rangers Moitsheki Machavi, Vuyiseka Nombe, and Rosina Mogale, who shared the challenges and triumphs of women in conservation. Nelly Leshilo from SUDI addressed the cycle of substance abuse, while Tshegofatso Molefe from LoveLife engaged learners on mental health and well-being. Kelebogile Moreotsile from Valterra Platinum discussed women’s contributions to biodiversity conservation.

The day also had a strong focus on practical support for girls and women. The Rhisotope Project donated 102 reusable Palesa Pad Care Packages to Grade 7 learners and female staff, with Kgothatso Sothomela and Molebogeng Ntshongwane giving guidance on feminine health and the environmental benefits of reusable sanitary products.

SUDI, Valterra Platinum, Anova, LoveLife, and Marakele National Park (SANParks) all added to the day’s success through donations of hygiene products, stationery, snack packs, and clean-up materials.

Closing the programme, Deo Gloria Primary School principal Mr Matlala thanked all participants and emphasised the importance of empowering women to protect the community’s shared natural heritage. This Women’s Day was not only about celebration – it was about action, education, and building a legacy for future generations.
