Africa is splitting in two… Scientists have confirmed that Africa is gradually tearing apart along the East African Rift. This massive crack stretches over 6,000 kilometres from the Red Sea down to Mozambique. It’s caused by the African continent separating into two tectonic plates: the Nubian Plate and the Somali Plate. The process is extremely slow — only a few millimetres per year — but over millions of years, it could create a brand-new ocean. In some places, like Ethiopia, the split is already visible at the surface, offering a rare glimpse of how continents change over time.
