Thabazimbi – It was a bitterly cold start and an even tougher finish for Hoërskool Frikkie Meyer’s rugby teams at the Limpopo Rugby Finals on Saturday, 26 July 2025, held at Hoërskool Ben Viljoen in Groblersdal.

Frikkie Meyer’s 2nd and 3rd teams made it to the finals, with buses departing at 02:00 and loyal parents braving the early-morning roads in support.

The 3rd team was up first, facing Hans Strijdom at 08:00. The game ended in a heartbreaking 0–8 loss, marking the end of an incredible 11-year streak in which Frikkie Meyer’s 3rd team had consistently brought home the league title.

Yet, it wasn’t just the game that left a lasting impression — it was the spirit in which it was played.

Before kick-off and after the final whistle, Frikkie Meyer’s 3rd team took a knee in prayer, showing grace in both anticipation and defeat. For many of these young men, this was their final match in school colours — and they played it with dignity and honour.

A moment of solemn respect followed when a Hans Strijdom player suffered a serious injury mid-game.

Frikkie Meyer’s players immediately bowed the knee once again, waiting quietly as paramedics treated and led the player off the field. In a sports culture often obsessed with winning, these young men reminded us of something far more important: compassion, character, and respect.

Coach Tinka van Wyk praised the players’ maturity, noting their sportsmanship and humility throughout the match. “Well done to the young men of the future,” she said.

The 2nd team also gave their all but narrowly lost 16–25 to Hans Strijdom. Despite the back-to-back defeats, the values on display — perseverance, team spirit, and respect for opponents — left Frikkie Meyer supporters beaming with pride.
