Thabazimbi – Local doctors and pharmacies have confirmed to Platinum Bushvelder that Thabazimbi is currently experiencing a measles outbreak, with many residents already infected. Community members are urged to take immediate precautions and seek medical attention if symptoms appear.

Measles is a highly contagious viral infection that primarily affects the respiratory system. It spreads through coughing, sneezing, or direct contact, and the virus can remain active in the air or on surfaces for up to two hours — meaning that even brief exposure can lead to infection.

Early symptoms typically develop 7–14 days after contact with an infected person and may include:

  • High fever
  • Runny nose
  • Cough
  • Diarrhoea
  • Red, watery eyes (conjunctivitis)

Two to three days after these initial symptoms, tiny white spots (Koplik spots) may appear inside the mouth. A rash usually follows 1–2 days later, lasting about five days — starting behind the ears and on the neck, then spreading to the face, body, arms, and legs.

Doctors urge residents to:

  • Isolate anyone showing symptoms to prevent further spread.
  • Do not send sick children to school.
  • Drink plenty of fluids and rest.
  • Consult your doctor, clinic, or pharmacist immediately if you suspect measles.
  • Use medication to relieve symptoms such as fever, cough, or diarrhoea.
  • Note that antibiotics are only needed for secondary infections like bronchitis or ear infections.

Prevention is key: ensure that your child’s vaccinations are up to date. The measles vaccine is safe, effective, and remains the best protection against infection.

Local health professionals emphasise that early detection and community awareness are crucial to stopping the spread. If you or your family show any symptoms, please visit your doctor, hospital, clinic, or pharmacy without delay.
