Thabazimbi – During the dry months the natural veld goes into ‘hibernation’ mode, resulting in nutrients retracting into the roots and leaving animals with inadequate nutrition.

As the situation differs from farm to farm and depending on the availability of roughage, a number of supplement feeding strategies can be implemented.

  • Scenario 1: If there is enough grazing and browse available on the farm, supplementation with a lick will be the most cost-effective way to keep your animals in good condition. WES Enterprises produces several different licks from winter maintenance to energy and production licks, which are safe for both cattle and game.
  • Scenario 2: If natural grazing and browse are limited, a combination of lick and supplementary feeding should be considered. This is where an energy or winter lick should be fed in conjunction with a feed like BOSKOS, in smaller quantities.
  • Scenario 3: If there is no grazing or browse available, a full rationed diet like BOSKOS or Volvoer are suggested to help the animals through the harsh months and to avoid mortalities.

The result of not managing animal feed during dry months can be fatal to a herd’s condition and especially their ability to breed.

Feeding only roughage will not be sufficient as this will only fill the animal’s rumen without providing the necessary nutrients and will ultimately lead to starvation.

WES Enterprises has successfully helped farmers through 27 winters with a number of feeding recommendations, which can be tailored to fit your needs. For more information contact them on 014 777 1330.
