PIPELINE OF POSSIBILITY

Thabazimbi — It’s not every day that a R17 billion national project arrives at your doorstep. But for communities in Thabazimbi, Northam and Regorogile, the long-awaited Mokolo Crocodile Water Augmentation Project – Phase 2A (MCWAP-2A) could be just that — a once-in-a-generation opportunity for jobs, business and progress.

The Trans-Caledon Tunnel Authority (TCTA), which is implementing the project on behalf of the Department of Water and Sanitation, officially introduced the chief engineer and main contractor during a community meeting held at Regorogile Community Hall on Tuesday, 11 November 2025.

The session, hosted by the Thabazimbi Local Municipality, drew a full house — with mayor cllr TJ Pilane, EXCO members, ward and PR councillors all pledging their support.

Jobs, skills and local business

The MCWAP-2A project will transfer water from the Crocodile River (West) to Lephalale, supplying Eskom’s Medupi Power Station, mines, and communities — and is expected to create around 2,000 job opportunities locally.

Employment registration dates will be announced soon, covering positions for skilled workers, electricians and unskilled labourers. A business database is also being developed for local SMMEs, who will need to be registered on the central supplier database (CSD) and have a valid MAAA number to qualify.

But the benefits go beyond jobs. The TCTA confirmed that training and upskilling programmes will accompany the project, preparing residents with technical and construction skills that last far longer than the build itself. Preference will be given to women, youth and people with disabilities, ensuring the project’s impact is inclusive and empowering.

A project to watch

While excitement is high, local leaders also urge patience and participation. With major infrastructure work comes temporary disruptions — from construction traffic to noise and dust — but the promise of sustainable opportunity outweighs the inconvenience.

Community engagement sessions will continue next week in Northam, Rooiberg and Smashblock, ensuring that everyone in the Thabazimbi area has a voice in this transformation.

“This project is more than water — it’s renewal flowing through our community,” said one Regorogile resident after the meeting. “We’re ready to roll up our sleeves.”
